Renewable Energy Conference in Dakar, Senegal
From 16-18 April 2008, the International Conference on Renewable Energy in Africa took place in Dakar, Senegal. The high-level conference was organised jointly by UNIDO, the African Union, the Government of Senegal, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

In the "Dakar Declaration on Scaling Up Renewable Energy in Africa" conference participants underlined the availability of vast renewable energy resources and the opportunities of renewable energy with regard to sustainable development. Expressing a vision to scale up renewables in Africa, the Dekar Declatation outlines a Plan of Action and calls upon governments and stakeholders to support its implementation.
Side event: Potential, markets and strategies for renewable energy in Africa. Presentation of forthcoming REN21 report.
On 18 April 2008, REN21 and AFREPREN, supported by the German Development Ministry and GTZ, hosted a side event.

Participants of the side event were given first insights into the forthcoming REN21 study "Renewable Energies for Africa: Potential, Markets and Strategies". Produced by AFREPREN and commissioned by GTZ, the new study investigates potential and status of renewables in Africa, reports on success stories, shares lessons learnt, and provides policy recommendations. In their presentation, Mr Steve Karekezi and Ms Waeni Kithyoma of AFREPREN focused on case studies of successful initiatives undertaken in African countries.

Some 80 conference participants attended the side event offered by AFREPREN and REN21.

The audiance enjoyed a lively debate with the expert panel which was further strengthened by Ms Touria Dafrallah.

The side event was moderated by Mr Mike Enskat of GTZ, opening remarks were given by Mr Manfred Konukiewitz of the German Development Ministry and Mr Philippe Lempp of REN21.
